It is a key element of flood protection in the central and western parts of Great Britain in the event of an extreme rise in water levels in the North Sea. The dam is 520 m long and was built between 1974 and 1984. The immediate impetus for the emergence of the barrier was the catastrophic flood of 1953. The construction of the dam began only in 1974, and the ceremonial opening by Queen Elizabeth II took place on May 8, 1984. The cost of construction was nearly 500 million pounds. The structure has a length of 520 m. The dam consists of nine reinforced pillars, forming six clearances for navigation (four main and two smaller) and four non-navigable channels.
