Hyfopodium
Hyfopodium (L. mn. hyfopodia) - a type of hypha in fungi. It is a one- or two-cell branching of the aerial mycelium. It occurs, for example, in the fungi of the genera Gaeumannomyces and Phialophora.
Hyfopodia have a similar role to appressoria and infection pads. They secrete a sticky substance with which the germ pore produced by the germinating spore is attached to the substrate. This substance contains polysaccharides and glycoproteins. In addition, appressoria and hyfopodia produce high osmotic pressure (up to 8 MPa) facilitating the piercing process of the cuticle of the affected plant.
