Karel Václav Rais


Karel Václav Rais (born 1859, died 1926) - Czech writer, representative of realism.

Karel Václav Rais was born on January 4, 1859 in the town of Lázně Bělohrad. He graduated from teacher's studies in Jičín. Then he worked as a teacher and director of a school for girls. He was influenced by Jan Neruda and Svatopluk Čech. Initially, he wrote post-mortem songs for young people. in the nineties of the nineteenth century he began to create realistic stories from the life of Moravian peasants. His most famous books include Rodiče a děti (Parents and Children, 1893). From 1902 to 1926 he was a co-editor of the Zvon magazine. Karel Václav Rais died in Prague on July 8, 1926. He was buried in the cemetery at Vinohrady in Prague.
