Erich Lessing
Erich Lessing (born July 13, 1923 in Vienna) - Austrian photographer of Jewish origin. The family had to flee from Austria, when the persecution of the Jews broke out there. Erich left the country in 1939 (his mother and his grandmother were murdered by the Germans in KL Auschwitz). After arriving in Palestine, he immediately began to study radio engineering at the Technion Institute of Technology in Haifa. In 1947 he returned to Austria and employed at the Associated Press. In 1951 he started cooperation with the photo agency "Magnum" and from that time he was passionate about documenting important political and social events. In 1956, he photographed, among others events of the Hungarian Uprising. He also created portraits of prominent politicians, documented Vienna's everyday life, and from 1960 he became interested in art and history. He lectured at universities in Austria and France.
