Kutas - in the seventeenth-eighteenth-century Poland shrovetide (dick, kwast, weed - a masonry ornament made of a thread with a thread or string) at the end of a rope, fastened to the belt as a decorative element. Often it was the bottom finish of richer portraits used in military uniforms and habits. Also decorative element of some types of hats (eg nightcaps) and curtains.
This is also a term referring to contemporary fringes and pompons.
