Terrestrial Planet Finder

Terrestrial Planet Finder - infrared interferometer

Terrestrial Planet Finder - a canceled project capable of detecting extrasolar planets near the Earth.

In 2002, two different solutions were proposed that would enable the required sensitivity. An additional objective of the device was to determine the composition of the atmosphere and the characteristics of the surfaces of newly discovered planets. In 2004 both projects were accepted by NASA and entered the next phase of research.

According to NASA plans, TPF-C was due to be shipped in 2014, and TPF-I's launch was planned for 2020. However, according to the NASA draft budget announced in February 2006, the work was timed indefinitely.

The European Space Agency was planning a similar mission - Darwin, but in 2007 it was also canceled.
