Valerie Davies (arachnolog)
Valerie Ethel (Todd) Davies (born 29 September 1920, 29 October 2012) is an Australian arachnologist. Valerie was the third daughter of James and Ethel Todd in New Zealand's Wanganui, where she attended Wanganui Girls' College. She continued her education at Victoria University in Wellington to undertake a degree in zoology at Otago University in Dunedin, graduating with a degree in masters. She received a scholarship to Somerville College, Oxford, where she graduated with a Ph.D. She returned to Dudein, where she got married, and in 1963 she moved with her family to Brisbane. In 1972, she was appointed curator of the Queensland Museum. Formally retired in 1985, but continued to work in the museum until 2002.
Davies's research focused on spiders. She has made numerous research expeditions. She described 17 new species for science and more than 100 species. In 1988 he was awarded the Queensland Museum Medal, and in 2010 he received an award from the International Society of Arachnology. She was named Toddian and 25 species in her honor.
