Sankey Channel
Sankey Canal - a waterway in the United Kingdom, opened in 1757. It is the oldest canal in the United Kingdom. It connects St Helens with the River Mersey. The channel was led by the Sankey River Valley, through Earlestown, Winwick, Warrington to Widnes, where it merges with the River Mersey. Erected for the transport of coal from the mines in St Helens and Haydock, also supplied sugar plants in Earlestown and Newton-le-Willows. Shipping stopped in 1963, and the channel fell into oblivion. In the eighties of the twentieth century actions were taken to channel restaurants. Bibliography
