The Byzantine Kantakuzen family came to Serbia at the time of George I Brankovich. Irena Kantakuzena became the wife of Jerzy I Brankovicz, her brother was Tomasz Kantakuzen, a diplomat in the service of the Serbian despot.
Jan was born in the town of Nowe Brdo in Serbia. His father is unknown by name. His brothers were Dmitri Kantakuzen, Alexei and George. After their family was taken over by the Turks, they were not affected by repression or resettlement. In 1468 he and his brother George rented a silver mine. He was executed on September 16, 1477 with his brothers in execution in Galat under the orders of Mehmed II the Conqueror. With his brothers, they lost four sons and twelve grandchildren. The only survivor of the slaughter was Dmitri Kantakuzen. The reason for the execution of Kantakuzen is unknown. Bibliography
