During the Second World War, the Germans organized a training center for the youth of the Hitlerjugend in the Lichenese sanctuary. The Nazi boys educator Bert Bauer was particularly cruel. In order to prove to his students that God does not exist, in July 1944 Bauer gathered them in front of the cross at the entrance of the cemetery and crossed the crucifix with the words: "If God existed, he should punish me immediately."
