Episternit (Latin episternum, plural episterna) - part of the pleuron of insects located in front of the pleural suture.

Episternit is the foremost of the two sclerites resulting from the division of pleural (lateral) trunk segment with a pleural suture (the posterior is epimerite). Episternit przedtułowia, or proepisternum, is undivided and can be mixed with lateral cervical sclerosis (laterocervicalia) or connected with it jointly. In the orthoptera, it is largely hidden under the fold of the pre-sponge.

The episternit of the tern, or mesepisternum, and the episternit of the zaciełowia or metepisternum can be variously modified. They can be divided into the upper part, i.e. the anepisternum and the lower one, i.e. katepisternum. The front part of the episternite called preepisternum can create a prepectus with the presternum. Epipleurites, including the basalare plate, can be separated from the upper edge.

The inner part of the episternites serves as the attachment point of various muscles, including tergo-pleural, epiphural and pleurococcal.
