Koobi Fora
Homo habilis skull from Koobi forum Koobi Forums - An extensive geological formation located on the eastern shore of Lake Turkana in northern Kenya. It is built of volcanic deposits of fluvio-deltaic and lakes, covered with tuffs. It is one of the most important paleoanthropological sites, there are numerous remains of early hominids and stone tools.
The Koobi Forum was first examined in the late 1960s by Richard Leakey. The thickness of the sediment is up to 500 meters. The oldest ones date back to about 3.2 million years, the youngest at about 1.3 million years ago. The tuff level dating back to about 1.8 million years divides the formation into upper and lower part. The Koobi Forums discovered over 150 hominid species belonging to the species Paranthropus boisei, Homo habilis, Homo rudolfensis and Homo erectus, as well as olive and Aszel.
