Alweola (fungi)
Alweoles in the edible pulp
Alweoles - pits in the fruiting bodies of some mushrooms. They may be round or rounded, such as Morchella, or are longitudinal pits, such as the pyrethrum (Gyromitra). They may be shallow or deep. Hexagonal alveoles give them the look of honeycomb. The longitudinal alveoli of the crest can form more or less parallel vertical ridges, or are folded, giving the fruiting bodies a cerebral appearance.
In the hollows of the alweoli there is a hymenial layer producing spores.
