The spearhead of Kowel
The spearhead of Kowel
The spearhead of Kowel - dating back to the 3rd century monument, a testimony of the migration of eastern Germanic tribes through the territory of present-day Ukraine. Currently lost.
The iron object was 15.5 cm long and 3 cm wide. On its surface is engraved read from right to left, inlaid with silver inscription T ᛁᛚᚨᚱᛁ D ᛊ (tilarids), which is translated as "striving for the goal." The letter t is written in a slightly unusual way, deviating from the standard rune alphabet. Language features indicate that the object was made in the circle of Gothic culture. The inscription is accompanied by abstract characters of obscure meaning, probably ornamental.
The monument was found in 1858 in Szuczyna near Kowel in Volhynia. It was stored in Warsaw. During World War II he was robbed by the Germans and since then his fate remains unknown.
