The Society of French Writers (Louis Société des gens de lettres de France) - an association founded by Louis Desnoyers on the initiative of Honoré de Balzac in 1838.
They were recognized as public utility by virtue of the decree of December 10, 1891. Among the first members of the Society were George Sand, Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas. In France, this is the only literary association managed by the literati. It was set up to defend the copyright, creative interests and legal and social status of all French writers.
