James Hannington

James Hannington (born September 3, 1847, Hurstpierpoint, England, died October 29, 1885, Busoga, Uganda) - British missionary, saint of the Anglican Church, martyr. His holiday falls on October 29. He was the first bishop of the Anglican Church in East Africa. Striving to build a shorter and safer road between Mombasa and Buganda fell into conflict with the kings of Buganda Mwanga II. On October 21, 1885, he and his men arrived near Lake Victoria. Their arrival, however, did not go unnoticed and the missionaries were imprisoned in Busoga by King Mwang. After eight days, James Hannington and the other missionaries were executed.

The English commemorated the bishop by calling him the lake currently known as Bogoria.
