Merseburg exit 1032

Merseburg Convention 1032 - Meeting of Emperor Konrad II and claimants to the throne of Poland on 7 July 1032.

Causes

In 1032 Prince Nawrym was murdered, ruling Poland after the escape of his half-brother Mieszko II. Poland remained without a ruler. The lieutenants of the throne stayed outside the country: Mieszko II, after escaping from Poland in 1031, was imprisoned by the Czech prince Uldaryk, while his younger brother Otto was in Germany at the time. The emperor organized a new military expedition to Poland in 1032. Its range and mileage is unknown. It is known, however, that Mieszko II returned from Czech slavery at the time.

In order to remain in the country, in the face of the decline of his half-brother and the reaction of the heathen, he had to rely on the emperor, and thus led to an encounter in Merseburg with all the throngs of emperors. This meeting, as Gerard Labuda states: There is no doubt that Mieszko came to Merseburg not at all voluntarily, but under the threat of a renewed German invasion. Hildesheim annals describe this event as follows: Assembly and its provisions

The congress was held on February 7, 1032. Mieszko II, in a hopeless situation, agreed to surrender the royal crown (crowned 25 December 1025) and to the division of the state. Emperor decided that Mieszko would occupy Malopolska and Mazovia, his younger brother Otto Silesia, and most likely the son, one of the Chrobry brothers: Mieszko or Lambert, Dytryk was to occupy the former state of Gniezno, Wielkopolska. These are the presumed areas that princes have received, since source information has not been preserved. After the Convention

In 1033 he died probably childless and in a free state of Otto, while Mieszko II took over his district. In the same year he also expelled Dytryka and consequently united the country. Sam died on 10th or 11th May 1034. Bibliography
