Edmond Friedel


Edmond Friedel (born 3 August 1895 in Nancy, died 15 August 1972) is a French geologist, the son of Georges Friedel. Director of the École nationale supérieure des mines de Paris in 1944-1963 (deputy director from 1936 to 1944). He studied at the École polytechnique and then at the École nationale supérieure des mines de Paris, where he started working. Before the war he worked in mines in Strasbourg, Metz and Arras. During World War II he helped students of Jewish descent and was arrested by the Gestapo. In 1964 he was awarded the Order of the Grand Officers.
