Berenika (gr. Βερενίκη; d. 71 p.n.) is a high-born woman from Chios, who became the mistress and third wife of King Pontu Mitrydades VI of Eupator.
In 86 p.n. Mitrydates VI sent his generals to conquer and deport the indigenous inhabitants of Chios, on which he intended to settle the Pontyan settlers.
At the same time, Mitrydates met Berenica, one of the high-born inhabitants of the capital city of Chios, sent to Ponta to negotiate with the king. Soon she became a mistress and later the third wife of Mithridates VI. We do not know anything about their relationship, although most likely it was for its part that Mitratti VI changed the name of the island capital of Chios to Berenike. The town was named after the Romans annexation of the island by about 85 p.n.e.
In 71 p.n. VIII ordered Berenice to commit suicide by taking poison so as not to fall into the hands of the Roman commander Lukullus and not give him the secret of her husband's tactics. When the poison was unsuccessful, Berenika was strangled. Bibliography
