Bartholomew Contarini


Bartholomew Contarini (15th century) - Venetian nobleman, the actual ruler of the Principality of Athens in 1453-1455. Curriculum vitae

He came from a Venetian aristocratic family, was a son of Priam, castellan nauplion. He had been a lover of Clara Zorzi, daughter of Nicholas III of Zorzi, Venetian ruler of the Marquis Bodonite (1411-1414). Klara Zorzi was the wife of Antoni II Acciaiuoli, Prince of Athens. In the years 1451-1455 she held regency in the duchy on behalf of her sons. The common rule of Clare and Bartholomew was overthrown in 1455 as a result of the intervention of the Sultan Mehmed II (1451-1481), who settled on the throne of his second son, Francis II Acciaiuoli.
