In 1937 he graduated from an incomplete high school, and in 1938 an aeroclub, he worked as a turner at a factory in Leningrad. By June 1942, he made 176 combat flights and knocked down 20 enemy aircraft. On August 6, 1942, during an air combat, his plane collided with a German plane; Baranov managed to jump on parachute, but he injured his leg and spine and went to hospital. when in January 1943 he recovered and made a test flight, during which the plane crashed and crashed, and the pilot died.
