heating plant

Heating plant - an industrial plant whose main task is the production of medium (mostly water) with high temperature for the municipal heating network. Conventional systems (ie fossil-fueled boiler installations) are now rarely found. This is due to the fact that a much higher efficiency is obtained by producing thermal and electrical energy in a combined way (see: heat and power plant).

In contrast, the production of heat alone using renewable energy sources is becoming more and more popular. Geothermal energy is most commonly used for this purpose, but large solar heating plants are being built more and more often, in which collector batteries heat water for utility purposes.

The largest solar plant at present (February 2004) is the Solfjärrvärmeanläggning (District Solar Heating Plant) in Kungälv (Sweden), which annually converts around 4,000,000 kWh of solar energy into thermal, usable.
