Cologne (ancient Rome)

Cologne (Latin colonia) - a city acquired or established by the Romans in conquered areas. Part of the population of the colony was resettled Roman citizens (landless peasants, veterans of the legion), the former inhabitants of the city also received Roman citizenship, but without all the rights of the immigrant Romans. The range of Roman colonies was gradually expanded, first in Italy, then in successively conquered territories in the Mediterranean (converted into the provinces). The colonies were initially primarily military (they were strategically located in regions that were strategically important), gradually becoming central centers of Romanization of the conquered lands.

The Roman colonies had partial autonomy; They had their own senate, but after the outbreak of war they were obliged to deliver military contingents.

The towns (formerly colonies) founded by the Romans are Köln (Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippina), Lincoln (Lindum Colonia) and Colchester (Colonia Claudia Victricensis).
