In the years 1934-1941 he was the chairman of a student organization in Lahore, in 1939 he joined the KPI, in which he later served many functions, including a member of the Central Committee (since 1952), the National Council and the Central Executive Committee (from 1958), as well as the publisher of the central press body of KPI, "New Age". He was active in the World Peace Council, 1952-1963 he was secretary general of the All India Peace Council, secretary general of the World Peace Council in 1966-1977, then president of the Council of 1977-1990. As the leader of the World Peace Council, he repeatedly spoke in the UN General Assembly.
