Peter Mädler

Peter Mädler was adopted by foster parents, growing up and grew up in Hoyerswerda. From 1958 to 1961, he learned the profession of an electrician at the factory vocational school in Lauta. After graduating in early 1961, he started working at the Lübbenau power plant.
Early on the morning of April 26, 1963, he attempted to escape from the GDR, trying to get through the Teltowkanal trough to the West Berlin located on the opposite bank. During this attempt, he was noticed by the border guards of the GDR, who immediately opened fire. Although Mädler was able to protect himself from bullets at first by immersing himself in the water, he was mortally hit emerging again at the opposite side of the border, and he immediately drowned. The corpse was recovered that same afternoon. The urn with the ashes of the dead was placed at the Waldfriedhof Cemetery in Hoyerswerda.
Two border troopers shooting for the escapee were awarded medals "For exemplary border service". In 1995, they were sentenced to 18 months' suspended prison sentence by sentence of the court in Potsdam.
