Lonsdale London
Lonsdale - British brand for sportswear and accessories.
HistoryThe name Lonsdale comes from the name of Lord Lonsdale, who organized boxing matches in 1909. Lord Lonsdale was chairman of the National Sports Club of Great Britain. Every boxer who became a champion and defended his title three times, received the Lonsdale Belt. Bernard Hart, a former boxer, visited the Lord in the 1960s and asked for permission to use his name on boxers' attire.
The company was founded in London in 1960. Before the company started producing sportswear, initially only boxing equipment was produced. In 1979, Paul Weller of The Jam bought the Lonsdale T-shirt and thus made a notorious brand, which resulted in the fact that not only athletes started wearing these clothes. In the 80s and 90s, Lonsdale's clothing was particularly popular with skinheads, punk and mods. Lonsdale's products were worn by many famous fighters. such as Mike Tyson, Henry Cooper, Muhammad Ali, Lennox Lewis.
The concept of Lonsdale youth has become widely used in the Netherlands as a synonym for young people connected with the neo-Nazi scene. The reason for this is the NSDAP-like letter in the brand name, similar to the NSDAP acronym. Young people who are sympathetic with Neo-Nazi movements sometimes wear Lonsdale clothes or jackets so that only NSDA letters are visible. The Lonsdale Company has been cut off from this type of behavior, and since 2003 has been campaigning to break with such an image by introducing Lonsdale loves all colors.
