Teodor Manfagas

Teodor Manfagas (Greek: Θεόδωρος Μαγκαφᾶς) - Byzantine aristocrat and military, usurper. Curriculum vitae

During the reign of Emperor Isaac II, Angelos (1185-1195), he declared himself in 1188 an independent ruler of Philadelphia in Asia Minor. He took the imperial title and beat his own coin. Isaac II recognized him as the governor of the city under the condition of disposing of the imperial ambitions and sending his son to court in Constantinople. In 1193, Theodor, however, was expelled from the city. During the chaos caused by the Fourth Crusade, he again took over Philadelphia in 1203. He reigned there until 1205. Bibliography
