Beryl Bainbridge


Beryl Bainbridge (born November 21, 1932 in Liverpool, 2 July 2010 in London) is an English novelist. Known mostly from psychological works, often macabre tales of the English working class. She won the Whitbread Book Awards for her best novels in 1977 and 1996; Five times nominated for the Booker Prize.

Initially she was an actress. In 1967 she published her first novel and wrote regularly until 2001. In the 90s, she dealt with the historical novel and gained commercial success. It was then The only novel ever released in Poland, Everybody Cares for Myself (1996), Titanic Catastrophe.

It was often reported that she was born on November 21, 1934, which was not true (as seen in the obituary even the BBC did not). In 1968 she made a trip through the United States. In 2000 she became the Commanding Officer (DBE) of the Order of the British Empire. She died of cancer.
