Curriculum vitae

Ludwik Shiwozuka was born in Nagasaki, birth date is unknown. His parents were Christians. At the age of nine he began studying at the Jesuit school in Nagasaki, where he prepared for the work of the catechist, which he then performed.

Siogun Ieyasu Tokugawa On January 27, 1614, he issued an order requiring all missionaries to leave Japan during the year. It turned out that the exile also concerned Louis Shiwozuk, as a person involved in the teaching of the Catholic religion. So he went to Manila. There he decided to become a priest. After completing his studies, he was ordained a priest in 1619. He wanted to return to Japan, but he suffered serious illness. He became a Franciscan tertiary monk, began to teach Japanese missionaries to set foot in Japan, and ministered to the Japanese living in Manila. In 1636 there was another opportunity to go to our homeland. Before leaving the Philippines, he asked to be accepted into the Dominican Order.

He then went on a journey with the Dominicans: Antoni Gonzalez, Wilhelm Courtet, Michal de Aozaraza and two laymen: Ruiz Vizier and Lazarus from Kyoto on missions to Japan. At that time, persecuted Christians were persecuted in Japan. They arrived in Okinawa at the end of June, 1636. The precautionary measures taken by the arrivals were insufficient and shortly after their arrival in Japan they were caught. For over a year they were imprisoned in Okinawa. On 13 September 1637 his, William Courtet and Michael de Aozaraza in cages were taken to Nagasaki. Promising a large sum of money was trying to persuade him to renounce his faith. When that did not work, the same goal was attempted by torture. Under their influence, he said he renounced the faith, but the torturers did not hear it and continued the torture. After returning to the cell, he began to regret the moment of weakness. He no longer renounced his faith and was therefore sentenced to death. On September 27, 1637, he was taken along with other Christians on the Nishizaka hill in Nagasaki, where tsurushi was applied to him. Because he was alive for a long time, the perpetrators began to beat him on the head until he died on September 29, 1637.

He was beatified by John Paul II on February 18, 1981 in Manila, Philippines, in the group of Lawrence Ruiz and his companions. The same group of martyrs was canonized by John Paul II on October 18, 1987. Bibliography
