Julian (komes Ceuty)

Julian - probably the last exarch of Carthage, the Byzantine commander of Septem (Ceuta) of a Visigothic origin.

Septem (today's Ceuta on the Moroccan coast) was annexed to Byzantium in 534. It served the Empire as an intelligence point, involving Spain and the western part of the Mediterranean basin. In 706 Julian, he replied the Arab attack. Then he became entangled in internal disputes in the Spanish kingdom of Visigoths. Thus he weakened his position. When in the 710 armies of the Arabs again attacked Septem, Julian persuaded the aggressors to leave the area and invade the Iberian Peninsula (it was about private accounts of Visigothic King Roderic). Soon Ceuta became the main place for the transfer of troops to the attacked Europe. After Julian's death, the Arabs took total control of the city. Septem was the last Byzantine stronghold in North Africa. Bibliography
