François Raynouard


The bust of François Raynouard chiseled by Victor Nicolas François Just Marie Raynouard (born 18 September 1761 in Brignoles, died 27 October 1836 in Passy) is a French historian, linguist and playwright.

He graduated from law school and worked as a lawyer in Draguignan. Imprisoned at the time of the French Revolution for supporting the Jurassic, he was released after the 9th thermidor. He returned to his hometown, where he successfully practiced law. In 1805 his tragedy Les Templiers liked Napoleon and was very successful at Comédie-Française. In 1807 he became a member of the French Academy. At the end of the First Empire he abandoned writing for the theater and devoted himself to philological research. He was interested in medieval languages. Famed for the six-volume work Choix des poésies originales des troubadour.
