In 1980 he graduated from the Diplomatic Academy and began work in diplomacy, initially working at the South East Asia Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR, and from October 9, 1980 to October 3, 1986 he was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the USSR in Laos.
