The Demoiselles de Langon

View of menhirs

Les Demoiselles de Langon - a group of neolithic menhirs located on the moor northwest of the town of Langon in the Ille-et-Vilaine department in the French Brittany.

At the site there are currently 29 stones: 23 quartz, 5 slates and 1 sandstone. Most have heights ranging from 20 cm to 1 m, six the largest from 1 to 1.63 m. There were much more boulders: in 1883, more than 40 were counted, and in 1950, 39. In 1976, the place received the monument historique status.

According to folk legend, boulders are girls who, on Sunday instead of going to church, danced in a meadow and were stone-washed for punishment. Menhirs are arranged in several groups. Most of them are arranged in the form of successive arcs, as if on the arms of concentric circles. Below are five menhirs set in an east-west line, seven are surrounded by a small hill on the north side.
