Talayot

Talayot in Mallorca

Talayot - a type of ancient megalithic stone building, occurring in Majorca and Minorca in the Balearic archipelago.

Talayotes are related to local culture called Talayotics, developing in the Balearic Islands since about 1700 BC. until the end of 2nd century BC. Exact chronology is unclear, but most of them date back to the turn of the 2nd and the 1st millennium BC. Construction function is also uncertain, they can play both defense, warehouse and residential role. Talayotes are similar in appearance to the building of the Nuragian civilization in Sardinia.

A typical talayot is a large rounded stone building with a flat roof supported by a powerful pillar. Later talayotes appear on the square. The circuit typically measures 10-12 meters. They were built into walls or in the middle of the settlement. To date, more than 300 such buildings have survived in the Balearic Islands.
