Raúl Leoni
Raúl Leoni Otero (born 26 April 1905, 5 July 1972) is a Venezuelan politician.
In 1928 he became president of the Venezuelan Students' Federation. From 1928 to 1936 he was in exile. Upon his return to the country he founded the National Democratic Party in 1937, and in 1945 he was among the founders of the Democratic Action Party led by Rómulo Betancourt. When Betancourt was president of Venezuela, Leoni became a minister in his government in 1945. It was until 1948 when that government was overthrown by the war minister Carlos Delgado Chalbaud. After this incident Leoni went once again to emigrate, but in 1958 he returned to his homeland and continued his political career. He served as president of the parliament (1959-1962) and then president of the state from March 13, 1964 to March 11, 1968. His government period was a period of guerrilla warfare. After the Machurucuto incident in May 1967, where the Venezuelan National Guard and the military were fighting with a 12-person Cuban unit and their trained rebels, there was a sharp deterioration of relations with the revolutionary government of Cuba.
