Oliviu Gherman


Oliviu Gherman (born April 26, 1930 in Mihai Viteazu in Cluj County) is a Romanian politician, physicist and mathematician, academic lecturer, 1992-1996 chairman of the Senate and post-communist Social Democrats. Curriculum vitae

In 1951 he graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca. In 1954 he became a candidate for science. From 1951 to 1966 he worked as an academic teacher at his home university, and as an associate professor in 1962. For the last year he was the Dean of Physics. In 1966 he took up a professorship at the University of Krajowa, where he was a vice-chancellor from 1966 to 1968, and from 1972 to 1974 he was dean of the chemistry department.

Since 1963, he belonged to the Romanian Communist Party. In 1990 he joined the National Salvation Front. After breaking up with FSN in support of Ion Iliescu in 1992 he co-created the Democratic Front of National Salvation. In the same year he headed the group, replacing the acting president. In 1993, following the merger of several small parties, FDSN was transformed into the Social Democratic Party of Romania, leading it to 1996. In 1990 he was first elected to the Senate, renewed his mandate in 1992, 1996 and 2000. From 1990 to 1992 and 1996 until 2000 he served as Vice-President of the Senate, and in 1992-1998 he headed the upper chamber of the Romanian Parliament. In 2001 he resigned his mandate in connection with his appointment as Ambassador to Romania in France.
