Velma Caldwell Melville (born 1858, died 1924) - poet and American prose writer. She was born on July 1, 1858 in the city of Greenwood, in Vernon County, Wisconsin, the daughter of William A. Caldwell and Artlissa Caldwell, née Jordan. Poet's father died during the Civil War. At the age of twenty, Velma married James Melville, a graduate of Wisconsin State University, an advocate of prohibition. She died on August 25, 1924 in Gainesville, Florida. She is the author of many poems and short stories. Her most famous work is White Dandy, or Master and I; A Horse's Story. Bibliography
