400 m men's changing style - one of the swimming competitions played during the XVIII Olympic Games in Tokyo. The qualifying rounds took place on October 12, and the finals were October 14, 1964.
American Dick Roth became the winner of this first-ever competition, setting a new world record (4: 45.4). United States representative Roy Saari, who led in the race after 300 meters, eventually won the silver medal with the time 4: 47.1. German Gerhard Hetz (4: 51.0) won the bronze, slightly ahead of Carl Robie's (4: 51,4) qualifying.
