Domesday Book (Masters)
Domesday Book - a volume of poems by the American poet Edgar Lee Masters, published in 1920 by the New Macmillan Company publishing house. The book's title refers to the medieval Book of the Last Judgment, written at the behest of King William the Conqueror. The main character of the song is Elenor Murray. The faint resemblance of her name to the name of the poet himself (paronomasia) shows that the author has been largely identified with the character he created. The Master considered Domesday Book his best work (finest achievement). Judicial speeches of people are shaped like Robert Browning's dramatic monologues. Bibliography
