Thomas Mitchell (traveler)


Thomas Mitchell Thomas Mitchell (born 16 May 1792 in Craigend, died 5 October 1855 in Sydney) is a British explorer and surveyor, Australian explorer. In the years 1811-1814 he served in the military geodetic school. In the years 1831-1847 he made several trips to the interior of eastern Australia, exploring the river system created by the Murray River and Darling River, discovered by Charles Sturt. In 1835, he founded Fort Bourke, which later developed into Bourke. In 1836 he discovered the present state of Victoria, which he called Australia Happy. In the second half of the 1840s he served as the principal surveyor in New South Wales.
