Samuel Scott

Thomas Hudson, Portrait of Samuela Scott View of the River Thames in London, 1750

Samuel Scott (born 1702 in London, died 12 October 1772 in Bath) is an English painter and aquabist.

Initially he created marinas under the direct influence of Willem van de Velde. When Canaletto arrived in London in 1746, Scott took up the painting of the London wedding. He developed a precise Canaletto technique to better reflect the vibrancy of the city.

For the best picture of Scott, An Arch of Westminster Bridge is now in the collection of Tate Britain. His pupils were landscapes by William Marlow and animalist painter Sawrey Gilpin. Bibliography
