Hans Monderman
Hans Monderman (2006 r.)
Hans Monderman (born on November 19, 1945 in Leeuwarden, died January 7, 2008) - Dutch transport engineer and innovator, known for the concept of radical redefinition of criteria for safety assessment in land traffic, which contributed to the creation of shared space (shared space).
The concept of shared space created by him is the planning of public space in such a way as to minimize the number of divisions between circular traffic and pedestrian traffic by eliminating elements such as curbs, level markings, traffic lights. Hans Monderman claimed that creating spaces with a greater degree of uncertainty of behavior of other traffic participants (increase of risk), introducing a situation in which there is no certainty as to who takes precedence, will cause that all participants of the movement will be less willing to take risky actions (the phenomenon known from the Peltzmana effect will work).
In 2005, he was nominated for the World Technology Award for the Environment.
