Initially he graduated from graphic design and planned to become an advertising designer. He then went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, a leading British theater school. In 1969 he made his acting debut in the movie, playing the role of adjutant in the war musical Oh! What a Lovely War, directed by Richard Attenborough. In the same year he made his way to the main cast of the comedy series Doctor in the House, which tells the tale of a group of medical students. He was in the form of Dick Stuart-Clark, a young man from a wealthy environment with a high scholarship paid by his late grandmother.
