Simon Rrota


Simon Rrota (born 23 October 1887 in Shkodër, died 27 January 1961 in Shkodër) is an Albanian painter and photographer. Curriculum vitae

Gjusha son of the Rapture. He spent his childhood in Shkodër, where he studied in a school run by the Franciscan Order. His first drawing lesson was with the famous painter Kolë Idromeno and then with Saverio Polarola, an Italian living in Shkodër. In 1915 he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Brera, where he studied under Alcide Campestrini. During his studies he stayed in France. After returning to Albania he worked as a photographer in Lushnji, and since 1922 he taught drawing at a school in Shkodër. Kushie's creative output includes the paintings of Shkodër (The Sharp Gate, 1934), portraits (Portrait of Kara Mahmut Pasha), Genre scenes (Next to a rural well, 1934). Most of his work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Tirana.

In 1961 he was posthumously awarded the title of Meritorious Artist (Picnic and Merituar) by the Albanians, and in 1999 he was awarded the title of Painter of the People (Picorum and Popullit). Bibliography
