Edmond Ryan


Edmond Ryan (born 17 February 1891 in Petone, died 29 August 1965 in Wainuiomata) is a New Zealand rugby player, national team player. Together with his six brothers, he was associated with the Petone Rugby Club, and in 1912 was also elected to the Wellington regional team. In his career he played 43 matches in 1923, including winning and defending Ranfurly Shield and playing against Springboks.

After the outbreak of World War I he served in Europe. In 1919 he played in a military team of New Zealand, led by his brother James, who won the King's Cup - rugby tournaments involving Australian, Canadian, British and South African teams. He later joined the touring team in South Africa.

In 1921 he was appointed to represent the country. The only match for All Blacks played against New South Wales. His brothers James, Joe, Michael and Bill also represented Wellington. Bibliography
