The barrier of Clichy

La Barrière de Clichy - oil painting painted by the French painter Horace Vernet in 1820. Presenting the episode of March 30, 1814 - Marshal Moncey issues an order to Colonel Odiot of the National Guard during the defense of Paris against the Sixth Army of the Ant Francophonie.

The image hides the realism of the situation - the officers gathered around the marshal are listening in his command, while the wounded guards in the foreground look exhausted and desperate for further resistance. To emphasize the tragedy of the situation, Vernet added a woman with his possessions that protects his tiny baby in his hands and is the only one in the image who looks at the "eye" of the viewer.
