Jürgen Chrobog (born February 28, 1940 in Berlin), German diplomat, deputy foreign minister, ambassador, lawyer.
He studied law in Freiburg, Göttingen and French Aix-en-Provence. He practiced as a lawyer in Hannover, and in 1972 he became a diplomat. Initially, he was associated with the United Nations Office in Germany, from 1973 to 1977 he worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the heads of departments Walter Scheel and Hans-Dietrich Genscher, dealing with European policy issues and relations with Third World countries. He joined the Free Democratic Party (FDP).
Since 1977 he spent several years at foreign institutions, initially in Singapore, then in Brussels. In 1984-1991 he was the head of the press department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was its spokesman, since 1988 he was head of the Cabinet of Minister Genscher. In the years 1995-2001 he was an ambassador in the United States.
In 2001, he was appointed Secretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by another minister, Joschka Fischer. He served until 2005, dealing with Negotiations after the abduction of German citizens in Algeria. Shortly after his retirement he fell victim to a kidnapping; In December 2005 he and his wife and three adult sons were abducted in Yemen, where he was invited by the Yemeni Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. At the end of December 2005 the diplomat and his family were released.
