Heinrich Felix Schmid

Heinrich Felix Schmid was born in Berlin. From 1902, the family traveled through Germany, Italy and Switzerland. In his childhood, he attended a German school in Rome. Besides his German, he spoke Italian, French, Latin and Russian well. He graduated from high school in 1914 in Wiesbaden, Hesse. During the First World War he fought in France, Bulgaria, Serbia and Belarus (he was wounded three times). Then he studied in Leipzig and at the University of Berlin (doctorate in 1922). After habilitation, he became a professor of Slavic philology at the University of Graz. In the years 1931-1932 and 1947-1948 he was the dean of the Faculty of Philosophy. In World War II Schmid served as an officer in aviation, in Norway, Slovakia and Ukraine. After his American captivity, he returned to Graz in June 1945. On February 26, 1948, he was appointed professor at the University of Vienna. In the years 1948-1963 he was the director of the local Institute of Eastern European History.
