Tombaugh Regio

"Heart" on Pluto, named Tombaugh Regio in honor of Pluto's explorer, Clyde Tombaugh

Tombaugh Regio - the name of a large structure on the surface of a dwarf planet Pluto. This area is distinguished by its lighter color and much smaller craters. It has a shape close to the heart and a diameter of about 1590 km. "Heart on Pluto" was first seen in July 2015 with images sent to Earth by New Horizons. Pluton's earlier photographs showed a brighter stain, but due to its low resolution, it was impossible to determine its shape.

In some memes circulating on the Internet, the shape of Tombaugh Regio is not compared to the heart, and to the head of the Pluto Dog.

The name Tombaugh Regio is not yet official - it must be approved by the International Astronomical Union. Bibliography
