In his youth he practiced cycling in the club of the Guard of Warsaw. He reached the medal of Polish championship five times. In 1956 he finished 3rd in the road race with the start of the joint and the Polish championships in the cross-country. He won two silver medals (1952, 1953) and two-time bronze medal in the 100 km race. Twice without success he competed in the Peace Race (1954 - 25 m, 1955 - 47 m). After completing his sports career he worked as a cyclist mechanic in the Polish Cycling Union.
In 1963 he became the assistant coach of Polish cyclist cadets Władysław Wandor, and in 1965 he replaced him in this position. Supported by Wojciech Walkiewicz and Zbigniew Rusin, he led Polish riders to unprecedented successes in the history of this discipline in Poland. the first gold medal at the World Championship (bronze in a team race at 100 km in 1971) and the first medal in road cycling at the Olympic Games (silver in a team race at 100 km in 1972). Moreover, in 1971 and 1972 Ryszard Szurkowski won the first Pole since the 1956 Peace Race. Other players included John Magiera, Zygmunt Hanusik, Zenon Czechowski, Lucjan Lis, Edward Barcik, Jan Smyrak, Janusz Kowalski.
Considered the most outstanding Polish coach in history, he was tragically killed in a car accident on 5 January 1973 in Skomielna Biala in Małopolskie Voivodeship. After his death his players reached in 1973 for the world championship both in the individual race (Ryszard Szurkowski in front of second Stanisław Szozda) as well as the team for 100 km.
